Calcined lime

What is calcined lime?

Calcined lime is also called quicklime. it is a substance that is produced by purification through heating the mineral limestone. This  highly reactive material urns into hydrated lime or slurry when exposed to moisture or water. This high reactivity has led many industries to  make good use of quicklime.  We intend to detail the applications of calcined lime from the construction industry to the cement production industry and steel production.

What is calcination?

The word calcination means applying very high heat  to decompose mineral stones or other materials. Calcined lime is the same as calcined lime. Mineral limestone is placed in special furnaces known as lime kilns, and then it is exposed to heat over 1000 degrees Celsius for a long time so that its ingredients begin to decompose.  At last, its unnecessary elements such as iron and magnesium and carbon dioxide in particular, are separated and pure lime with the molecular formula of calcium oxide remains.

Calcined lime names

Based on to its chemical and physical characteristics, this lime has different names in different industries. As an example, since it is obtained through being baking by high heat, it is known as slaked  lime. Additionally, because calcined lime has an unstable composition and if it comes into contact with water, a strong chemical reaction occurs, it is also called quicklime. This type of lime is also known as slaked lime or lump lime.

The difference between raw lime and calcined lime

A great amount of raw lime exists in Earth’s crust in the form of calcium carbonate rock with the chemical formula CaCO3. The impurity of this material is because of the presence of carbon dioxide, magnesium, iron, aluminum, etc., which reduce the quality of this material to be used in different industries. This has led the calcination process to be carried out in a temperature of more than 900-1000 degrees centigrade in order to be used effectively. This process removes carbon dioxide gas and other impurities and turns the material into calcium oxide with the chemical formula CaO.

Calcined lime formula

Mineral limestone is covered with various impurities such as iron, dolomite, magnesium, carbonate, etc. To clear out this impurity and gain pure lime, it is exposed to a lot of heat. Finally, calcined lime is obtained with the structural formula of calcium oxide as CaO.  All types of lime, both impure and processed, are a combination of calcium.

Industrial application of calcined lime

As discussed above, for a better efficiency, the impurity is removed by calcination which makes it a widely used and highly pure material.  In addition, due to its characteristics,  this material has been widely used in various industries including:

  • Using the iron smelting furnace and steel production in iron ore refinement
  • Lime shale production
  • Stabilizer of clay and flowing soil by removing silica and alumina
  • Production of Portland cement to create adhesion
  • A strong disinfectant used in poultry and dairy farming and fish and shrimp ponds
  • Mixing cement and sand to obtain aerated concrete
  • Sewage cleaning
  • Water disinfection
