Limestone

Limestone is one of the sedimentary carbonate rocks which includes calcium carbonate (Caco3) and dolomite CaMg (CO3)2. This rock is a sedimentary rock with biological origin. Its origin originates in the deposition of materials in the earlier ages of the Earth. The strong desire of lime to combine with metals creates problems in its application in the vicinity of metals. But it has many useful applications in the construction industry.

What is lime?

Lime is the sediment of plant and animal carcasses with biological origin that have been formed over millions of years. Until our era, these sediments have turned into rocks with the ability to melt at 2500 degrees Celsius. The strong desire of lime to combine with water has made maintaining this material difficult and sensitive.

The process of converting limestone into a usable material takes place in the furnace and during stages with a temperature of 900 degrees Celsius.  These steps evaporate and remove excess moisture and finally prepare it for use in various industries. The ultimate product of this process is referred to as quicklime, which with its different properties is ready to be used.

What are the major applications of lime?

Lime or calcium oxide (Cao) is a white, hard and odorless substance. Its alkaline property causes itching and burning in contact with hands and eyes.

This material has been used since ancient times as one of the key construction materials, along with wood and stone, and it has been used in the construction and repair of bridges and strengthening connections. It can be used in curbing the growth of unwanted plants on road boundaries and disinfection in agriculture.

Limestone mines

Lime mines abound in various parts; the most famous of which are located in Khuzestan, Isfahan, Kerman, Lorestan and Fars. The lime extracted from these mines is used in the form of quicklime and pure lime after purification and through the required steps.

Various applications of lime in industry

Lime is widely used as a building material. Also, it has many uses in other industries such as porcelain making, food industry and sugar refining, cement making and glass making.

Lime is used in agriculture as a disinfectant. It has an important role in the road making and construction industry. Using lime is an easy and affordable way to prevent the excessive growth of plants in areas under road construction which is a problem for the project managers.
